The other day I went shopping with Mrs G, and noted that on the return leg (the other side of the MRR2 where we live) there was a police road stop set up. Now, after 22 years of driving in Malaysia, I tend to avoid police road stops where possible, but I decided I would put this one to the test to see what the set up was like, and what they were asking drivers.
So, having bought some essential items and topped up on fresh groceries at our preferred supermarket at Ampang Point, we headed home. Sure enough, the road stop was still in place, and we were invited to lower our window for a chat. The first officer was from the traffic police, who wanted to know what we were doing out on the roads. We said we’d been shopping and he noted the bags in the car. He then invited us to pull over to the side where we had another chat, this time with a police officer (PDRM). She was firm but polite: only one person is permitted to leave the house in order to go shopping. If we’d been on the outbound journey, we would have been sent home where one of us would have had to be dropped off. As it was, since we were returning home, we were basically told not to do it again, and sent on our way.
We were not, on this occasion, asked to present any paperwork proving where we live, nor show any identification, passport or driving licence. I also don’t recall if they checked the validity of our road tax. However, from what I’ve read online, I think it’s a good idea if you do have all of those papers on you to avoid any complications.
It was good to see the PDRM behaving professionally and courteously! Incidentally, there was a third person after the police officer, dressed in combats and from the army. One can only assume reinforcements! Please, never be tempted to run a road block, the consequences will be dire.
Stay safe out there and stay legal!!! Please feel free to chat with us anytime!
