Hey KL Expats, Expat Car Sales is here to help you with a bit of a tricky issue because of the MCO. Renewing insurance and road tax! Read the four simple steps below and you should be good to go!
1. In the event either or both your vehicle insurance or road tax are expiring soon, you can still renew them, despite JPJ being closed and offline. The Post Office, which is the obvious choice for many, are unable to renew road tax as they are linked directly to JPJ.
2. For insurance, you will most likely find that your company is still able to do this by a simple email conversation or phone call. If you are having difficulty, please contact us as we have a direct link to our preferred insurance company who so far have been able to assist.
3. Some insurance companies offer you the option of renewing your road tax on your behalf, and will calculate the amount and add it to you insurance premium. They will then most likely have the road tax delivered to your door.
Alternatively, you can use MYEG to arrange insurance and/or road tax for you online. It’s all done remotely, just follow the instructions and pay at the end et voila, you’re street legal again!! I gave this a shot the other day for an older vehicle of ours and insurance was done in 5 minutes. The certificate and billing details are emailed to you immediately.
4. If you choose option B, you can then buy the road tax with MYEG, and opt for ‘deliver during MCO’ or ‘deliver after MCO’. If you would rather limit contact with people outside your household and opt for delivery after MCO, you can still drive your car. It’s important to print off your insurance cover note (you should do this in any case and keep in the glove box for when it’s needed) and also your receipt showing you have bought the road tax. This you can display in the window and show to any JPJ or police official should you be stopped.
Stay safe out there and stay legal!!! Please feel free to chat with us anytime! All best, Gerald
